Some insight into the different types of aviation medical certificates issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

1. First-Class Medical Certificate:

  • Requirements: Most stringent medical standards, requiring thorough examinations and testing.
  • Who needs it: Airline pilots (ATP privileges), instructors for instrument rating or multiengine rating, and pilots flying under certain operational limitations.
  • Validity: 12 months for pilots under 40, 6 months for pilots 40 and older.

2. Second-Class Medical Certificate:

  1. Requirements: Less stringent than first-class, but still comprehensive.
  2. Who needs it: Commercial pilots, flight instructors with certain privileges (e.g., instrument rating), and private pilots flying for compensation or carrying passengers for hire.
  3. Validity: 12 months.

3. Third-Class Medical Certificate:

  • Requirements: Easiest to obtain, with basic medical standards.
  • Who needs it: Private pilots flying for non-commercial purposes, recreational pilots, student pilots, and flight instructors with limited privileges.
  • Validity: 24 months over 40 years old and 60 months under 40 years old.

4. BasicMed:

  • Requirements: Alternative to third-class medical, with online self-assessment and medical examination every two years.
  • Who needs it: Private pilots flying non-commercially in certain aircraft (e.g., piston-engine airplanes under 6,000 lbs.) and under specific airspace restrictions.
  • Validity: 48 months.

*Remember, the type of medical certificate you need depends on your flying privileges and the type of aircraft you operate. You should always consult with the FAA or an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) for specific requirements and current guidelines.

For the most up-to-date and comprehensive information on Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs), you can utilize the FAA website’s designee locator at: https://designee.faa.gov/designeeLocator. This resource allows you to find alternative options and access the latest details regarding AMEs.
