How to Get Certified as a Flight Instructor (CFI)
So, you’re a commercial pilot with 300 hours, now what? Charter companies don’t hire until you have at least 1200 hours and Airlines,1500 hours. And those are just the minimums.
To help bridge this gap, you can accumulate hours while being compensated for teaching.

Sharing your passion for aviation is best applied when teaching others as a Certified Flight Instructor, or CFI. Whether teaching a student how to fly an aircraft under VFR rules or an instrument pilot under IFR rules, achieving your CFI & CFII ratings is a challenging, yet very rewarding experience!
All In Aviation is equipped to help you achieve both.
The average flight instructor spends 14-24 months of their career accumulating hours. Demand for instructors is as an all-time high, so begin now and get started on an incredible career.
Our CFI staff is led by our Director of Flight Operations, Carl May, who holds a Gold Seal CFI. Instructors must have 2 years of instructional experience to teach CFI, and with Carl’s leadership and oversight, we will make certain to provide quality mentoring, instruction and actionable goals.
Certified Flight Instructor certificate is an additional card you receive from the FAA that is valid for 24 calendar months and requires continuing education for renewal. Once you achieve the license to teach, you will want to add the capability to educate others on instrument flying procedures.
Your CFII can easily be accomplished in our fleet of G1000 equipped aircraft.
There are specific criteria to be eligible for a certified flight instructor certificate & instrument rating. The FAA details them in CFR 61.183. Here’s a short version:
Prerequisites:
- Age: 18 Years Old
- Must hold a Commercial Pilot or Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate
- Total Flight Time: 250 Hours Total Time
- Must hold an Instrument Rating
- Hold a 3rd Class Medical to act as PIC or Crew Member
- FAA Written Tests
- Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI)
- FAA Certified Flight Instructor Knowledge Exam (FIA)
- FAA Practical Tests (Check-ride)
- Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
- Certificate Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII)
